The final indoor event of the season at Lemont High School is often a low-key competition. But Sandburg senior Nick DePesa got the crowd ignited with his exploits in the High Jump.
With the weather limiting his practice time (his first actual High Jump practice finally came this past week), Nick refused to let anything stop him in this meet - no excuses. Entering the competition with a PR of 6' 0" and facing some tough competition from two Eisenhower jumpers, Nick launched himself to a new personal record of 6' 5" to win the competition. Following that, he took a shot at the school record of 6' 5.75" (set by Dan Barrett in 1991) - narrowly missing on his final attempt. We can't wait to see him get another crack at that record!
Those ten points in the High Jump helped to propel the Eagles to repeat as Lemont Invite champs - scoring a nine point win over Lemont High School (99 to 90).
Additional Lemont winners included Justin Adams with a time of 4:45.40 in the 1600 meter run, Ayoolumide Abiona with a winning jump of 19' 0" in the Long Jump and the 4 x 800 meter relay team (freshman Martin Skucas and sophomores Max Lehnhardt, Anthony Lifonti and Brandon Lukas) in a time of 8:50.01.
Other top 4 finishers included Josh Scheldberg (6.99) in the 55 meter dash, Sylvester Caulton (24.92) in the 200, Jibreel Brown (56.43) and Steven Wagner-Zbonski (57.31) in the 400, Brian McMahon (2:13.17) and Michael Brower (2:17.60) in the 800, Matt Benz-Weeden (10:55.66) in the 3200, Ja'Khari Person (9.24) in the 55 meter hurdles, Zach Fijolek, Adam Nash, Kyle Robinson & Jordon Woods (1:41.55) in the 4 x 200 meter relay, Tamonte Brown, Ayoolumide Abiona, Josh Scheldberg & Jordon Woods (3:51.56) in the 4 x 400 meter relay, Logan Burnson (44' 7.5") in the Shot Put and Ethan Lim (38" 0.5") in the Triple Jump.
All in all, a very nice effort by the Sandburg Eagles. Now it's on to Outdoors. Get ready to throw on a few layers and join us on April 8th at Sandburg.
