The Varsity fell just short in their effort to repeat as indoor conference champs - finishing in 2nd
place with 106 points - 4.5 points behind winner Homewood-Flossmoor.
In the field events, Peter Rodriguez captured first place in the shot put with a new PR of 49' 0.5". LaVelle Johnson long jumped 20' 2", good for 4th place. In the triple jump, Adam Nash (40' 7.5") grabbed 3rd place, while Zach Fijolek (39' 3.5") jumped to 7th. Nick DePesa (5' 10") placed 3rd in the high jump.
In the relays, the 4x800 squad placed 6th with a time of 9:25.16. The 4x200 meter quartet grabbed 2nd place with a time of 1:44.58, while the 4x400 boys also placed 2nd in a time of 3:42.24.
Shaking off a little rust, conference champ Will Becker ran 9:58.43 in the 3200, while Justin Adams took 3rd in 10:10.61. Sprinters LaVelle Johnson (6.85) and Dan Trentacoste (6.94) placed 2nd and 3rd in the 55 meter dash. In the 800, Matt Hetzler battled a great field, taking 3rd place in 2:03.77.
Ryan Parthemore (54.26) ran to 2nd in the 400, with teammate Jon Milazzo (56.33) placing 8th.
In the strongest varsity event, we saw a sophomore trio of scorers with Sean Torpy (4:31.39) in first place, followed by Chris Torpy (4:33.94) in 4th and Tom Brennan (4:36.83) in 5th. Sandburg Frosh/Soph boys are Conference champs!
Improving on their 2nd place finish from 2013, the Frosh/Soph team captured first place with 137.50 points over Lockport HS (125 points in 2nd place).
The field events saw some strong performances, with frosh sensation Ayoolumide Abiona leaping 20' 3" for 2nd place (missing first by 1") and Dean Yozze taking 3rd with long jump of 19' 0". Jordon Woods won the triple jump crown with a hop-skip-jump of 38' 2.25". And Jibreel Brown won the high jump at 5' 8", with teammate Alan Budz (4' 10") tying for 7th place.
In the relays, the 4x800 squad placed 6th with a time of 9:43.52. The 4x200 meter team ran to 3rd place with a time of 1:42.97 and the 4x400 boys placed 2nd in a time of 3:54.46.
The distance squad came thru big-time, sweeping the top 3 spots in both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs - scoring a total of 48 points! Freshman Martin Skucas led the way in the 3200 with a time of 10:08.93. Dan Laskero followed for 2nd in 10:19.77, with David Gleisner (10:25.58) in 3rd. In the 1600, the sweep was led by Max Lehnhardt with a time of 4:49.41. Brandon Lukas (4:49.79) was right behind in 2nd and Anthony Lifonti ran a huge PR (4:53.98) to finish in 3rd place.
In the 55 meter dash, Ayoolumide Abiona scorched the field - his winning time of 6.64 was faster than the Varsity winner. Alex Szymanski placed 6th in the 800 with a time of 2:23.57. Josh Sheldberg scored twice - capturing first in the 400 in 57.79 and coming back for 5th in the 200 with a time of 25.68. Steven Wagner-Zbonski also scored in the 400 - placing 3rd in 57.89.
