In the Varsity race at Richard Spring, you are allowed up to 10 runners. As I've noted before, we are short on upperclassmen this year, so we only raced 5. Grant Giblin, our lone senior for the varsity, returned to racing this week and began the process of shaking off the rust. He went out hard with a 4:42 first mile before finishing with his 2nd fastest Detweiller time of 14:59 - good for 30th place overall. It was a very solid season debut. Luke Atzman, a junior, ran very well also and was out in 4:50 for the mile. He moved up to 42nd at mile 2, before fading a bit to finish with a new PR of 15:26 and 67th place. Sophomore Mateo Ramiro-Garcia was very steady thru the race, finishing in 98th place in 15:36 and another new PR. Junior Jack Easterhouse was our 4th finisher in 16:14 and 197th place. As a freshman in 2021, Jack had run 21:12 at PND - quite the improvement in 2 years! Closing out the scoring was sophomore Jackson Canellis. He struggled a bit mid-race, but rallied in the final mile to finish in 16:28 (229th place).
Overall, the Eagles placed 18th out of 68 teams with 593 points. Hersey won the meet with 127.

The Frosh-Soph race was certainly the highlight of the day for the Eagles. Freshman Brayden Gaffud showed no fear in sticking his nose in the front of the race. His opening mile of 4:56 was the first time he broke 5 for any mile. He continued moving up thru the race and finished 3rd overall (first freshman) in 15:26. That's a new freshman record for Sandburg. Sophomore Myles Jacquez was our 2nd finisher in 16:47, good for 66th place. Our 3rd scorer was Gunner Hinger, another freshman, in 73rd place with a time of 16:53. Ben Lewandowski continued to show big improvement and grabbed 82nd place in 16:57. As a freshman last year, Ben ran 22:03 - over a 5 minute improvement in just one year! Our final scorer for the race was Gavin Smalarz who improved over 4 minutes and 30 seconds versus last year. He finished in 96th place with a time of 17:01.
The Eagles placed 8th overall with 305 points. Prospect was first with 81.
