I was a member of the 1976 and 1977 state qualifying teams that finished 12th and 8th respectively. During those years, I was fortunate to train and race with the likes of Tom Graves, Bob Hicks and Mike Keane. I believe we were the first teams from Sandburg to qualify for this meet. I suppose our team finishes were helped (significantly) by a 1st and 13th individual place finish in 1976 and a 1st individual place finish in 1977.
I returned to Detweiller Park in September for the 1st time in many years to watch my son compete at nearly the same course. The trip brought back many memories of two cold November days. I remember the rush from the crowd and that the level of competition was nothing like I had experienced before. It was almost overwhelming.
I have not had the opportunity to watch your top runners compete in races. Every meet that my son raced and Sandburg also competed, the top runners were competing at a different meet. But, I have been able to follow your successes through the internet and the on-line blog of Coach Novak.
Your team is very impressive!
It's weird, you train all summer during the heat and humidity for this one Saturday in early November. Keep in mind you have proved yourself through countless workouts and numerous races. Just remember, you belong there and have earned your place. Make history.
Best wishes and the good of luck, hopefully, I will be able to watch you compete in-person. I will have my vintage Sandburg wool cap with me to cheer you on.
