The meet started out well with the 4 x 8 squad capturing first place in 8:07.27. Tommy Brennan ran the leadoff leg in 1:59 and handed off to Anthony Lifonti who ran 2:03. Max Lehnhardt carried the baton on the third leg in 2:06 and anchor man Chris Torpy wrapped things up with a 1:57 final leg.
Next up was the 4x100 meter relay and the team of Jordon Woods, Ayo Abiona, Ryan Parthemore and Jibreel Brown came thru big-time with a second place finish in 42.99.
In the 3200 meter run, the Eagles showed their distance depth with David Gleisner winning in 9:39.19 and Dan Laskero capturing 3rd place in 9:53.54.
After Ja'Khari Person grabbed a point with a 6th place finish in the 110 meter hurdles (16.80), Ayo Abiona scored big again, running 10.87 for 2nd place in the 100 meter dash.
The 800 meter run followed, with the Eagles again finishing 1-3. Chris Torpy won a key battle against Bolingbrook, taking the title in 1:56.62 with a gutsy homestretch effort. Tommy Brennan also doubled back from the 4x8 and grabbed 3rd place in 2:00.44.
The 4x200 meter relay team also scored some key points for us with Josh Scheldberg, Jordon Woods, Leo Espino and Tamonte Brown finishing in 4th in 1:33.06.
In the 400 meter dash, Jibreel Brown won a close battle for 2nd place with a time of 50.74 and Steven Wagner-Zbonski added a 4th place finish in the 300 meter hurdles in 41.47.
The 1600 meter run was one of the highlight events for Sandburg. Sean Torpy ran away from the field in the last two laps and kept the pedal to the floor to win with a sparkling time of 4:14.81. Teammate Brandon Lukas went out hard and then held off a serious Bolingbrook challenge to nail down 2nd place in 4:28.87. The 1-2 finish was good for 18 points for the Eagles.
Ayo Abiona came back in the 200 meter dash to race to 2nd place again in a time of 22.42. And in the final running event of the night, the 4x400 meter team of Ryan Parthemore (53.5), Leo Espino (53.2), Chris Torpy (50.4) and Jibreel Brown (51.6) placed third in 3:28.82.
If you've been following along, you may realize that the Eagles scored in every running event here - a true team effort!
In the field events, Ayo Abiona jumped 22' 2" - good enough for first place in the Long Jump. For the night, that's 1 first and 3 seconds for Ayo - good for 34 total points. Chase Woolery came thru with a nice 4th place finish in the Shot Put with a toss of 42' 4". And to close out the night, with the whole team gathered around the runway as darkness set in, the Triple Jump produced a 4th place finish by Jordon Woods (41' 1/2") and a 5th by Zach Fijolek (40' 10").
Conference meets are all about the team - and a Varsity Conference championship is a great way to finish off this part of the season. Next up for this squad is the Sectional meet. Let's see how many of these guys can qualify for the State Meet in Charleston!
