Sandburg State Qualifiers !!!
On a beautiful Friday night at Downers Grove North, the Sandburg Eagles remained undefeated.
Top 5 team scores:
Sandburg 97
Lockport 71
Downers Grove South 59
Hinsdale Central 55
Downers Grove North 54
Here is a summary of the Sandburg scoring:
100 meter dash
Just missing out on qualifying for State, Nick Malliaras scored 6 points for the team with a 3rd place finish with a time of 11.06.
200 meter dash
In the 200, we had two scorers, with Nick Malliaras (22.42) finishing 3rd again (6 points) and sophomore LaVelle Johnson (23.31) taking 6th place (1 point).
400 meter dash
Also scoring twice in the 400 - totalling 14 points with two sophomores - Ryan Parthemore placed 3rd with a time of 51.38, while Collin Slattery was 4th in 52.39. These guys are going to be very good over the next 2 years!
800 meter run
In a very competitive 800 meter race, Nicholas Prajka finished 3rd (six points), but still qualified for State. The State mark was 1:57.24 - and Prajka ran exactly that time - no room to spare!
1600 meter run
Coming thru with 10 points, we had Pat McMahon finishing in third place with a State Qualifying time of 4:19.47 and Denis O'Callaghan (recovering from the flu) capturing 4th in 4:23.49. Although he just missed the State mark, I was extremely impressed with Denis' effort in this race.
3200 meter run
Another 10 points in this event, as junior Will Becker ignited the crowd with a 64 second last lap in a great attempt to qualify for State. Becker's time of 9:32.25 was good for 3rd place, but fell just short of the State time. In fourth place was Pat Letz, bouncing back from his sub-par conference race to finish his Sandburg track career with a 9:37.92. Nice effort by both of these runners!
110 meter hurdles
In fourth place (good for 4 points) we had Dan Huff with a time of 15.12.
300 meter hurdles
Capturing 4th again, Dan Huff ran 40.68 for another 4 team points.
4 x 100 meter relay
Dominating the competition, the relay team of Ian Hollendonner, Lemonte Booker, Jim Hill & Nick Malliaras raced to first place (& 10 points) with a time of 41.99. That mark shattered the school record and stands as the 3rd fastest time out of all the Class AAA Sectional qualifiers. Look for these guys to do something special at the State Meet in Charleston.
4 x 400 meter relay
Continuing their undefeated season, the 4 x 400 relay team - Ian Hollendonner, Joe Licata, Ryan Parthemore & Nicholas Prajka - ran away for the win in 3:22.71 (just missing the school record). This team has a chance to surprise some people at the State Meet too.
4 x 800 meter relay
Getting the meet off to a rousing start, the 4 x 800 meter relay team stayed undefeated (& un-challenged) once again. Freshman Sean Torpy (2:00.5) got things rolling, then Joe Licata broke things open with a 1:56.1 leg. Joe handed to freshman Chris Torpy (2:00.1) and then senior Pat McMahon closed things out with a 1:56.4. Their winning time was 7:53.84. Look for our 4 x 8 team to do some serious damage on the blue track at Eastern this weekend!
Long Jump
Another sectional champion here & ten more team points. Lemonte Booker fought off the light rain during the Long Jump to win the competition with a jump of 22' 4.5". As one of the State's top long jumpers, Lemonte is looking to have a top finish at the State Meet.
What a great season so far. now it's on to the State Meet for our 3 relays and 3 individuals. Congrats to everyone on a great season!
