Tom Graves visits practice. On Friday, April 5th, the Sandburg boys track team received a surprise visit from one of the All-Time Greats. Tom Graves drove all the way from Virginia to share some stories and advice with our track squad. The boys got first-hand recounts of those epic battles with Jim Spivey, Ron Craker and many of the other great Illinois runners from the late-70's. Tom is one of the all-time best in Illinois. In cross country, he finished in 3rd place as a sophomore and then followed that up with first place finishes as a junior & senior. His winning time of 13:56.6 as a senior in 1977 still ranks as the 4th fastest time for the Illinois State Meet. In track, he is the only 3-time State Champion in the 2 mile / 3200, winning as a sophomore, junior and senior. He also finished 2nd in the Mile (to teammate Bob Hicks) his junior year and won the mile as a senior. His track bests were 4:07 for the mile and 8:49 for the 2 mile. It was quite a treat for the boys and should provide some great motivation to succeed this season!!! Hillcrest Hawk Classic Invitational - 4/4/13 Our second invite of the night saw the Sandburg Eagles stepping it up a notch and winning another championship. This time the Eagles totalled 156 points, with Shepard in 2nd with 80. There were several big highlights, with the Frosh/Soph 4 x 100 meter relay team of Collin Slattery, Graham Hevel, Ryan Parthemore & Lavelle Johnson (44.47) throwing down a meet record & F/S school record. Later in the Frosh/Soph 4 x 200 meter relay, this same foursome (Slattery, Hevel, Parthemore & Johnson) ran another meet record & F/S school record. Great job by this sophomore group!!! Other first place finishers included the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Matt Hetzler, Chris Hogan, Nicholas Prajka & Pat McMahon (8:08.74), Dan Huff (14.59) in the 110 meter hurdles, Aaron Graves (2:01.96) in the 800, Dan Huff (40.71) in the 300 meter hurdles, Denis O'Callaghan (4:24.84) in the 1600 and the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Jim Hill, Joe Licata, Matt Hetzler & Nicholas Prajka (3:27.90). Runner-up finishers included the varsity 4 x 100 meter relay team (43.24), Pat Letz (9:51.02) in the 3200, Nicholas Prajka (51.12) in the 400, Nick Malliaras (21' 2") in the Long Jump & Nick Depesa (6' 0") in the High Jump. We also had some nice performances to capture third place, including Will Becker (9:55.43) in the 3200, Bill Sieczkowski (2:02.75) in the 800, Rafal Nakonieczny (42.81) in the 300 meter hurdles & Lemont Booker (20' 8") in the Long Jump. This team is on a serious roll!!! Joliet West Frosh/Soph Invitational - 4/4/2013 What a great night for Sandburg track. Two Invitational Championships in one night! Kicking things off at the Joliet West F/S invite, the Eagles ran away with a victory at the eight-team meet. Sandburg's first place total was 148 points, with Waubonsie Valley finishing in second with 102. The meet started off in great fashion, with the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Greg Burzinski, Tom Brennan, Chris Torpy & Sean Torpy finishing first and breaking the F/S school record with a time of 8:24.66. Even more impressive when you consider that 3 of those runners are just freshmen!!! Other winners on the night included Jon Milazzo (55.07) in the 400, Greg Burzinski (4:49.71) in the 1600, Max Lehnhardt (10:31.61) in the 3200, Tommy Demogerontas (5' 8") in the High Jump, Zac Fijolek (38' 7") in the Triple Jump and our 4 x 400 meter relay team of Tom Brennan, Jon Milazzo, Chris Torpy & Sean Torpy (3:41.59). We also had several second place finishers, including Sylvester Caulton (11.93) in the 100, Dean Yozze (23.98) in the 200, Sean Torpy (4:52.76) in the 1600, Riley Lyvers (37' 6.5") in the Shot Put and our 4 x 200 meter relay team of Josh Scheldberg, Juan Zavala, Sylvester Caulton & Dean Yozze (1:38.11) . With this kind of young talent, this Sandburg track team should be very strong for years to come! |
